about

In 2006 I released my first LP, Awakening. A largely sample-based work, at the time it was a display of where I thought I was best suited to preform — in beat-laden, sampler-driven genres like trip-hop, illbient, and a bunch of other lost styles of the late 90’s and early 2000’s with dumb names. By then I felt quite proficient with a sampler, and was becoming more confident with synthesizers, but was eager to learn a lot more about synths. But lets face it, I was just 21 years old at the time, so I had a lot more to learn about everything.

That summer I went down to visit my family while they were on vacation on the coast. I took a laptop loaded with my DAW (I believe I was still using Orion at the time), some freeware emulators of classic synthesizers and drum machines, and a pair of headphones, and that was all. In the evenings I’d take the laptop up to a porch near the dunes and sit in the hot night air, staving off Palmetto bugs while I tweaked synths and beat machines to figure out how they worked.

By the time I drove home to Black Mountain two weeks later, I had a good start on around 20 minimal techno tunes and a handful of finished pieces. I had every intention of making them into an album, but by the time I returned to college I had begun working with the band that would become the Electric Ghost Collective, switching my focus entirely from electronic music to Americana and Rock & Roll. In the process, the work in progress — which I had titled Adjust Your Horizontal — was all but forgotten.

Fast forward 13 years to when I was putting together the studio where I still work: I dug up a hard drive only to find a handful of mostly finished records. The session files are inaccessible these days, since Orion is a now defunct DAW, but I had bounces of most of the finished songs, including these five fully realized pieces from Adjust Your Horizontal. I was even able to dig up the extremely dated artwork for the project!

I usually expect to cringe when listening back to music I dig up on old hard drives, and I did certainly cringe and get a good laugh at the artwork (which I decided to keep, as you might have noticed). But I think I was on to something with this little record. I find that it has actually aged quite well, something that I attribute largely to the limitations that I put on myself during its creation — vintage and classic synthesizer sounds, vintage drum machine sounds, limited effects, and maybe a mellotron or EPiano. Proving a long held belief of mine, that many of our best ideas come from giving ourselves limitations and a boundaries in which to play. -- Jonathan Ammons (2023)
