Hiraeth: (n.) Welsh — a feeling of homesickness or deep longing for a place to which one cannot return; sometimes a place that never was.

I am as surprised as anyone to be putting out an album of piano music. But for the past few years, as I was splashing around with more experimental music and tinkering around with deep oceans of tape machines and soundscapes, it occurred to me that I should form a habit to keep me firmly anchored in good melodies. So I started trying to write pieces entirely on the piano — something that, oddly enough, I had never done before.

The project was born out of an attempt to teach myself to play a few pieces I loved by other composers. I’d drag a midi map into my DAW and learn to play along with the notes on the screen. But when I went to learn In a Landscape by the great John Cage, to my dismay, I could not find a midi map of the piece. So I attempted to use a program to convert a digital copy of the sheet music into midi. The results were anything but the original John Cage piece, but there were some truly lovely moments among the chaos. So I began composing around what the machine had given me and called the piece Of a Landscape.

From then on, for the better part of a year, I made a point of setting aside other projects to finish a piece of piano music every month. Hiraeth is a selection of 7 of those pieces that struck me as having a similar emotional resonance. An emotion for which I believe the Welsch have the best term — hiraeth.
