about

"One of my favorite things about ambient music is that it is largely built to be ignored. Brian Eno initially suggested that his records be turned down to a nearly inaudible level, or be played from another room entirely. The inventor of the concept, Erik Satie, stopped making what would become known as ambient music because he complained that people kept stopping what they were doing to listen to the music, and that defeated the point of him having made it in the first place.

It strikes me these days that everywhere I look, there is something else demanding my attention. An advertisement interrupting a playlist online, a text interrupting dinner, a phone call in the middle of a movie, more podcasts than anyone can pay attention to.

I’ve always listened to, and often made ambient music. Primarily because it is a wonderful meditation to make; you and an instrument or two in a room, with no intent on making something meaningful, just something that feels right, or something that captures the mood. And then comes the listening, which is my favorite part! Because, as I said before, this is music that is meant to be ignored!

But I find that the best part of having this kind of music droning on in the background while you go about your day are those moments that drove Satie mad, those moments where you look up from your email, or stop folding the laundry, or dry the dishwater off your hands to pause and listen for just a few seconds to some raptured melody or pretty line before it drifts back into the hum of the background. Those pleasant moments of pause that happen so often in our days, but that we so rarely remember.

I was walking to the mailbox this morning when I saw a hawk land in the neighbors tree. Climbing the steps back to the house I heard the peck of a woodpecker in the oak in the front yard, and I turned and stood on the porch and watched the hawk in the tree and the woodpecker chipping away, and thought, these few seconds may not be the highlight, but they have been one of the best parts of my day.
