from that IED

when he brings the cane.
The VA gave him pills
to hold back most the pain.

it shouldn’t be like this.

You still remember
how he looked
in his dress blues
just before his plane took off.

You could have been
a Gold Star mom.
He could have been a hero
but he lived a little long.

And you can’t help wonder
how long he can live like this.
